I can highly recommend it… Spanish is a good one, Mike learnt Spanish in high school and its come in so handy throughout so many countries :. Italian is one I would love to learn… Such a beautiful language. I need to give it more priority.
I made a point of doing at least 15 minutes a day, I tried to channel the time I usually procrastinate on Facebook for this instead. Was a pretty effective strategy :D. Is the content focused to travellers? Absolutely, there are over hours of content which is awesome because you can tailor your learning to whatever you want to brush up on.
Everyone I spoke to before I jumped on had incredible things to say about them, and I now understand why! Around 15 minutes a day for 3 months to get a confident handle on it. Nice one! Maybe French can be my third … probably getting ahead of myself there though lol :D. That is great! Frank wants to learn Spanish, he has a bit but wants to be fluent.
Rosetta Stone has a lot of experience in language learning, I remember their CDs back in the day, probably the best language learning course available back then. If you want to learn Japanese, Rosetta Stone is an absolute winner for me. However, Rosetta Stone is very good if you already know Japanese, as a refresher course.
You can easily toggle back and forth between spoken and written in Romaji Roman letters and Kanji and Kana Japanese characters and syllables. I have found no other program that allows that, although there may be some. I found it helpful as a refresher before a recent trip to give a talk in Hiroshima. It can be useful if used with the help of a teacher. With my students, I hide the screen while they hear and then say a word, phrase, or sentence.
They then repeat, give the English translation, and then I let them look at the screen. Over time, they build up a vocabulary and can pronounce and understand the words. But to learn to conjugate verbs and some adjectives, parts of speech that are not used in English, word order, and to practice conversation, my students need me.
Let me offer my credentials for having an opinion about learning Japanese and the efficiency of Rosetta Stone in that effort. Total time: almost two years, six or seven hours a day, with native Japanese teachers. I lived in Japan the first year of the occupation, part of the time immersed with a family who spoke no English.
After all that, although I am fluent which only means that words flow easily but by no means a native speaker, Japanese is not a slam-dunk. The military likes to rank its graduates, and I was ranked in the middle of my class, average. But, unlike the children in Lake Wobegon, everybody who tries to learn Japanese will not be above average. You guessed right. I mention this only because I teach Japanese today and am restoring my college French.
My view is that no one has a language block at any age. The local community is so excited to see that I am starting to learn their language. I've tried other language learning software but Rosetta Stone is much more challenging and professional. I don't have to worry about earning points and following the leader board. I'm trying out the ninety day trial to learn some Russian and I will pay for the privilege once I reach the end of the trial.
