ScottD Senior Member Dec 21, I can see where the modern weapons being automatic could be fired left or right handed easily. But what about M24's. Like redlevel said, you could reach over and operate the bolt , but that was back when they used open sights. Now you would be reaching over the scope too, so it may be a little more difficult. When this came up, I was thinking more about when the army used bolt actions. Springfield's Also got me to thinking about other weapons like handguns mainly holsters or some of the specialized weapons.
Thanks for the info. Shwnster New Member Dec 21, I have been in the Infantry since My first issue was a M16 A2 which has a built in brass deflector. I never had to deal with the A1. I am left eye dominant and prefer to shoot left handed even though I am right handed. The only brass I ever had hit me in the face was from the guy next to me on the firing line. The M4 is the same.
The only issue I ever had with the M4 is the placement of the standard tactical sling. If you tighten it as it should be it can at times block the ejection port. I always jimmied mine to where it was loose just enough to bow out away from the port. The M24 only came in right hand. When firing remember you are supported always and you only have to back your face off a little to allow your right hand to re-chamber a round.
Which is not good but necessary. FishinMech Senior Member Dec 21, The reason the military will only issue right handed models is because they want the weapons to be the same. If a lefty dies during combat and a righty picks up their weapon, or vice versa, there is no question as to how to handle the weapon Everyone can use the same weapon and it operates the same way for everyone. If you have to stop and think about how to use it, it can cost you your life and the lives of your men. Boom Senior Member Dec 22, I was in the military from - Qualified with everything they handed me in right handed weapons.
Never got hit in the face with brass while I was firing. For a while, I had to lead and train shore teams and I was a little exercised about the 45s being awkward for lefties to use quickly if needed.
Then it sank into my brain that I never saw a 45 in four years that I knew to be a decent shooter. It would never matter. We had no gunsmiths to straighten them out.

Site Notices. Meyers' New "Pocket Rocket". I am right handed but shoot left. View Full Version : left handed shooter with right eye dominance Im 17, and i am joining the Marines nexy year. I have shot shotguns and small rifles as a kid but not that often. In the past year however i have started shooting a lot more with pistols, and ARs. My question is, seeing that i shoot left handed but i recently found out i have right eye dominance, should i learn to shoot right handed before i go to boot camp?
I heard that they train you to shoot with your dominant eye, not your hand. Right now i shoot a pistol with my right eye closed and its kind of awkward. So should i start shooting righty with a pistol and a rifle? Use your right eye dominance
