As such, Amy wore a different name tag in almost every Superstore episode. They belonged to former employees or to employees who weren't on shift at the same time as Amy. In some cases, they were just random names that belonged to no one at Cloud 9. All that mattered was that Amy could not be identified by the people who shopped at the store. While a couple of names did get repeated, she only wore a name tag that read "Amy" on three occasions across the episodes her character appeared in.
That's pretty impressive when examined from a distance. She even continued this practice once she became the store's manager. We were really pushed for time — we made the book in less than a year — and because of COVID we had a reduced team and reduced number of days.
We had certain spaces that we could use and we styled the sets as we went along. There was not really a great deal of planning. What I liked about it, is that this is exactly how we worked with Amy. Having this approach made the shoot feel much more authentic. PL: The shoot felt like a manic three-day endurance test! It was amazing to watch you and Andrew Hobbs the photographer work: balancing all the shots, deciding which corner was missing something and filling it with a pop of colour from a scarf — tinkering with the picture until it came together.
NP: Absolutely! Andrew and I are friends first and foremost, and we work well together. He completely got the vision. His input was fantastic, creating all the little details that make the picture come alive. From the cigarette burning in the tray to the ketchup on the burger, all these touches make it feel like Amy has just walked out the room.
PL : And having all five Grammy Awards together at the shoot was a really special moment. She often opts for knee-high skirts and tights topped with a long sweater most of the time — it's hard to think of an episode where Amy is wearing jeans.
Her conservative style matched her personality as Amy was uptight and closed-off in season 3. In season 4's "The Agreement Dissection," Amy started breaking out of her shell a little bit. While she didn't switch from those striped sweaters she loved, she did let her new "bestie" Penny influence her fashion choices a bit.
It looks like Penny lived the life Amy wanted, and becoming friends with her was a chance to start fresh in adulthood. Now that she and Penny were becoming closer in the fourth season, Amy started letting viewers see more of personality — and colorful sweaters. Season 5 was a big one for Amy. She became more comfortable with her new friends and realized how involved she was with Sheldon.
Sheldon was her first real boyfriend before they even had a title. With Amy's growing comfort in her own skin came a little playtime in her closet.
In "The Countdown Reflection," Amy was Bernadette's maid of honor and wore a beautiful pink gown for the occasion. The tiara on her head was also a special look into the mind of Amy Farrah Fowler. She wore something similar in season 5's "The Pulled Groin Extrapolation. Amy outwardly loving her appearance proves how good she was feeling on the inside, too. In the sixth season, Amy still wore a ton of layers and prints but she toned it down a notch.
Instead of wearing stripes and plaid, she opted for various solid colors instead. Luella had fantastic, short dresses, and same with Betsey Johnson. Because she was so strong-willed, she was very particular about what she wore. She really loved underwear, too. She had a ridiculous amount of underwear and always insisted on wearing frilly French knickers under everything, despite how snug her dresses were. She also liked really bold, old-school prints.
Black and white looked really great on her. She would pull it [the belt] so tight that it would bring her in and give her a bit more of an hourglass figure. She wanted that sexy, curvy shape that she used to have. On a day-to-day basis, Amy dressed herself. Towards the end [of her life], she did her own makeup and hair on tours too, even though she was so famous by that point. Offstage, she was very casual. It was strictly ballet pumps, jeans, and a polo shirt.
At night when she was working, it was very much little dresses and heels.
