Pullela Gopichand is a popular name in the Indian badminton circuit not only because of his coaching but also for his playing days in badminton. In , he won the All England Open Badminton Championship and also has couple of commonwealth games medals to his name.
On coaching front, he is the Chief National Coach for the Indian national team and he has trained some of the best badminton players the country has ever produced with also two Olympics medals coming under his tenure as coach. Let's have a look at the students of Pullela Gopichand who have played at the Olympics. PV Sindhu is one of the best players in the world for some time now. She has five World championship medal to her name with last one being a gold medal in the World championships.
When Sindhu won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics, Pullela was her coach and she was trained under him at the Gopichand badminton academy. After a long successful association with Pullela Gopichand, she left the academy this year to train at Gachibowli stadium. Srikanth Kidambi joined Gopichand badminton academy in He started his junior career in but his major break came in the year when he won the Swiss open by defeating Viktor Axelsen.
In Rio Olympics, under the guidance of Pullela Gopichand he reached till the quarter-finals and lost to Lin Dan in the quarters. In , when Gopichand had to manage workload with a number of top players under his wings, Sindhu and some other female shuttlers were asked to train under, Kim Ji Hyun who joined the Indian badminton coaching team in March Sindhu enjoyed a great run under him and went on to win the BWF World Championships title in the same year, becoming the first Indian to achieve the feat.
Her current coach Sang was appointed to train her after Kim resigned in and the duo has since worked well together. While it was all going well as Sindhu was training at the Gopichand Academy with other top shuttlers, rumours of a split between her and the national badminton coach spread on social media after Sindhu travelled to London for three months for recovery and assistance in nutrition in October There were reports that all was not well between Sindhu and Gopichand, and that the shuttler had quit the national camp which was underway at the Gopichand Academy to travel to England after her fall out with the coach.
Her father PV Ramana had later claimed that Sindhu decided to head to London as Gopichand was not able to focus on her alone. His comments further added fuel to the fire before the shuttler decided to issue a clarification herself and said she had no issues with Gopichand or the facilities at his academy. While a lot was made out of her decision to leave the academy, in an interview to Times of India , Sindhu had put to bed all speculations surrounding her rift with Gopichand and explained her decision to move to the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium was based on the facilities and the arena's familiarity with those used at the international level, including Olympics.
Having said that, nothing much should be read between my decision to train at the indoor badminton halls. The world champion made it clear her decision to move out was purely based on the facilities at the Gachibowli Stadium and that the rumours of her rift with coach Gopichand were all baseless.
The hard work put in by the shuttler ahead of the Olympics has so far been reflected in her performances at the ongoing Tokyo Games, where she is a win away from confirming a medal.
