Worldly Experience You don't have to be a world traveler like Hetty to be culturally enlightened. You can also get a computer game version of Jeopardy. A key rule to remember is that it's never as easy as it looks! Sure, you might be able to ace your favorite game show when you're sitting in your easy chair, in front of your TV set in the comfort of your own home.
But when you're standing in front of a live studio audience, under bright, hot lights, with a camera pointed in your face, and 10 million people watching your every move, the adrenaline starts flowing, and it's a whole other story. It also helps if you can practice speaking in front of an audience, so you don't "freeze up" during the initial interview or worse, during the show.
When you go in for the game show interview, be sure to "give the people what they want ": dress for success. Good grooming and a nice suit never hurt anyone's chances and it goes without saying that you have to be sober.
Be sure to speak up, producers hate it when people mumble or speak so softly that they can't be heard clearly. If it's a silly show, such as " The Price Is Right ," be sure to show a lot of enthusiasm - they want colorful, happy contestants who the viewers will like. If you're trying out for a more sedate show, like " Jeopardy ," be friendly and outgoing, but try to maintain a reasonable sense of decorum.
And no matter what show you try out for, be sure to smile! All producers love happy contestants who look like they're having a good time. Game show producers love out-of-towners. They took Polaroid headshots of us, gave us each a Jeopardy! It was like a medium-sized meeting room, about the size of maybe two bedrooms put together.
So about 40 of us in the group, sat in tables of two or three. She won a Jeopardy! I asked Ben what the actual audition process was like. At first, it just seemed kind of hokey. They were shouting out clues at us and asking us to give responses. You know, just raise your hand if you think you know a response. Some people are faster at writing, some people are faster at typing. After that, they go off and they grade them.
So we were just talking amongst ourselves. As someone grades the test, the contestants play a mock game. No one knows what a passing score is. But those were the old days. During the mock game, three potential contestants were chosen to play a mock game, complete with mini game board and signaling devices. I thought that was a trade secret.
I had done my homework after I found out I was going to be auditioning. Only the contestant coordinators do. So sometimes, they call on a name. They want everyone to have something close to an equal number of chances.
How well you enunciate. How well you keep the game moving along. Like, decades among them. They know what makes a good contestant.
Be nervous excited, not nervous tense. My favorite game show growing up was Hollywood Squares. Years later, my first job in the business was with Merrill Heater, who created Hollywood Squares. I really felt blessed with my favorite producer and my favorite host years later. I thought it was so cool. Beverly recalled a story about a contestant she casted for Are You Smarter than a 5th grader who was asked to come back in a few days.
Angered and frustrated, he initially refused. After two days of cajoling and asking him to return, he eventually ceded to her request and made it back onto the show. Are they fun? You have to have personality. You have to be really personable and outgoing. The wife was great; we had her on. The husband came in about two or three weeks later. We wanted them to pay attention. There were like 30 people in the room and all the producers. I walk away.
I ran into him recently. His excuse was he was an ac-torr. This is a game show. They want real people who want real emotions and not acting emotions.
One of the things that Bev stressed to me was how you physically present yourself during your audition. Not outrageous. I just had a girl the other day, I was casting a pilot of a game show. I almost fell over when I saw her walk in. Thank God she had leggings. I cannot bring you into the producers like this. Walk in with your hair and makeup done. A nice outfit on. Nice shoes. So camera-ready. At the end of the day, the job of the casting director is to pluck the most entertaining people out of the available auditions to fill out that piece of the game show puzzle.
It is certainly not your birthright to be on a game show, as much as you may want it. In order to take part in this piece of entertainment, you have to be able to fit well in the machine that is the entertainment industry. I overlook certain things. I remember this couple—they had tried out for every game show in town.
Nothing to write home about. She told me that they auditioned for every show in town. So ladies, this is your opportunity to step up, and convince the rest of the world of what we already know: that this is a season worth watching. And producers have put together a group of 29 women who seem ideally suited to improving the franchise's success rate. They have jobs, some of them are over 30, and they all seem really excited about marriage. But that isn't all it takes.
While this show bangs its head against the wall trying to figure out out what exactly helps a relationship survive once the show wraps, there are easier things for the rest of us to focus on. The qualities that make for smooth sailing through this heart-wrenching competition for the contestants and compelling TV for us are imminently more tackle-able.
So here they are, all 14 of them. These are the qualities you need to be a great Bachelor contestant. Although they don't necessarily guarantee you'll get picked, of course. You're going up against literally dozens of other women, dating the same man you want to marry. And it's on national television.
You have to be sure of yourself, or the insecurities can be detrimental.
